young driver ready to replace his expired driver's license

The rules, costs and timelines for renewing your driver’s license differ from state to state. If you don’t renew your license before its expiration, there is a chance that you will have to retake your driving test. Your experience as a driver will help you with situational driving questions, but questions regarding fines and less common laws often leave experienced drivers stumped. Our free driving tests are updated annually, nearly identical to the official exams, and will properly prepare you to renew your driver’s license with ease.

Is it time?

Do you know when your driver’s license expires? Not all states send renewal notices, so it’s important to be aware of your driver’s license expiration date, how far in advance you may renew, and if there is a grace period following your license expiration date. Waiting too long to renew your license could result in fees and having to retake one or more driving exams to obtain a license. Find your state below for more information on renewing your driver’s license.

Do I Need to go In Person?

There are four ways to renew your driver’s license — in person, by mail, by telephone or online. However, not every state offers all four of these options. If you have changed your name, address, or other information, you may have to renew in person. If your license has expired beyond a certain time period, you may also have to renew in person. On the other hand, states like Pennsylvania don’t allow in-person license renewals at all. Make sure to check with your local BMV, DLD, DMV, DOL, DOT, DPS, MVA or OMV for state-specific requirements for driver’s license renewal.

Do I Need to Take a New Photo?

Your driver’s license photo has to be updated periodically as you age to accurately represent your appearance. How often you have to update your driver’s license photo differs for each state, as does whether or not you are allowed to smile in your photo. For the best results, plan ahead. If you are renewing in person, it’s a good idea to assume you may have your photo taken and dress accordingly. Here are seven great tips for taking an excellent driver's license photo to help you take a photo you’ll love for the next several years.

Do I Have to Retake the Test?

If your driver’s license has expired, there’s a high likelihood that you will need to retake one or more exams to renew your license. While you may pass the driving test with flying colors, the written exam’s answers aren’t always so obvious.
